Lt. Richard H. (Dick) Fleischer was sent to New Guinea in June 1943 with the 348th the first group in the fifth Air Force to fly the big Thunderbolt.

Flying a P-47D-2, Richard experienced his first combat December 27th 1943 when he was scrambled with Blue Flight, 340 FS, 348th FG to intercept what turned out to be 12 Vals. The dive-bombers were harassing US PT Boats operating off the SW coast of New Britain Island near Arawe. Spotting the dive-bombers, Dick called out to drop tanks, then dove in to intercept.

“Coming in fast, we throttled back to come up from under at about a 20 degree angle” as the Vals were heading to attack the PT Boats. The 1st Val was shot down with hits to the engine and right wing. A wingover and a four second burst got #2, both are confirmed by the Navy.

A 3rd Val was fired at, but uncertain as to outcome. Only four Vals made it home. Dick finished the war with 6 victories.
