'SMOKIN'' by DON FEIGHT
Built in the 1920s, these coal-fired steam locomotives (all numbered in the 480s) have spent their entire lives pulling trains on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and their predecessor, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Ten K-36 class locomotives were built and were the last narrow gauge engines purchased by the Rio Grande. The Cumbres Scenic & Toltec Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroads operate most of the K-36s still in existence.
