Whether the scenes depicted in this print, and its companion print Another Close Call, are real or the figment of someone’s imagination is shrouded in a cloud of mystery. However the AVG was indeed disbanded on July 4, 1942 and was replaced by the 23rd Fighter Group under the command of Robert L. Scott, who later authored several books including “God Is My Co-Pilot.” The 23rd FG along with a few B-25s were all that General Chennault had in his fledgling China Air Task Force, (CATF). By the spring of 1943 this had grown into the 14th AF.
Short Flight depicts a P-51B from the 14th AF on an escort mission over Kowloon Harbor in the fall of 1944. Of course there’s a story behind these two prints but you will have to ask to find out.
