Republic Aviation's P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Jug", was the largest, heaviest, and most expensive fighter aircraft in history to be powered by a single reciprocating engine. It was one of the main United States Army Air Force's fighters of World War II. With eight .50-caliber machine guns - four per wing - the P-47 was not only very effective in air combat, but proved especially adept at ground attack, as well.
"IN THROUGH THE BACK DOOR" depicts an American P-47 Thunderbolt with D-Day markings diving on a Luftwaffe bomber.
