AMAZINGLY SIGNIFICANT HISTORICALLY, this item is from one of the five Luftwaffe pilots known as the “SWARM of LIARS’. The following is from the inscription on the plaque:

Uffz. Erwin Sawallisch was a “33 Victory” ACE who flew in the Spanish Civil War, Battle of France, Battle of Britain, Operation Barbarossa and North Africa. While with the famous JG27 in North Africa (members Adolf Galland and Joachim Marseille) Sawallisch achieved notoriety by being a part of the “SCHWARM OF LIARS” in which he and four other Luftwaffe pilots (Bendert, Vögl, Stiegler and Just) falsified their claims of aerial victories. As if to confirm his guilt, on the day after the “SCHWARM OF LIARS” were discovered, Sawallisch committed suicide (AUGUST 19, 1942) by crashing his Messerschmitt Bf 109 into the Mediterranean Sea. His body was found the next day on the beach of the Mediterranean. Sawallisch claimed a total of 33 victories from which 9 were claimed on the East Front and 24 claims with the “SWARM OF LIARS. No less than 18 of these 24 claims were false.
