Squadron Leader Henry Maudslay flying Lancaster ED937 makes his first approach to the Eder Dam during Operation Chastise, 17th May 1943. This very difficult approach involved diving down a gorge near Waldeck Castle before making a sharp left turn to line up with the Eder Dam seen in the distance. After several failed attempts, three crews managed to drop their Upkeeps on target although Maudslay's blew up on the crest of the dam, possibly damaging his aircraft as a result. Henry Maudslay and his crew were one of the eight crews that failed to return that night, shot down by flak near Emmerich on the way home.
